how do you get sewing machine oil off a polyester cotton shirt?

Shampoo works well, too… I use the cheapest non-conditioning shampoo I can find (typically Suave) for pre-treating lots of stains.

Polyester is a non-polar molecule in “chemistry speak” – that means it will bind to oils strongly, and doesn’t tend to want to release them. So the other part of the equation is going to be washing the shirt in good detergent ASAP, and air drying the shirt and inspecting it for residual stains. It may require several washings before you can trust the shirt to the dryer (which will tend to set grease stains on polyester).
